Historical Note
Gilman, Colorado was officially founded in 1886 following the establishment of a post office in the town, however the land had been inhabited by miners and prospectors since the late 1870s. Mining operation continued in and around the town until 1984 when the mine workings of Eagle Mine were allowed to flood. Following the secession of mining operations, the town and surrounding area were declared an EPA Superfund site in 1986 due to surface water pollution and airborne contamination from the mine tailings and seepage from the flooded mine. Gulf + Western Industries, later Viacom International Inc., but now CBS Operations Inc. was declared responsible for the cleanup of the site. EPA, CBS, and local cleanup efforts have continued over the years, but at this point the "public health risks have been removed and [significant] progress has been made in restoring the Eagle River."
