Historical Note
F.V. Hayden led many expeditions exploring, mapping, and assessing regions of the western United States between 1871 and 1875. His reports were later published with maps and details by the United States Government. His team was comprised of scientists, surveyors, photographers, physicians, and others. The result of these various expeditions ended with the official creation of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in 1879.
